The alternative is the X.org server, to which the main distributions are
switching.

There will still be a few. There is still a chance that what's left of
the XFree86 organisation will come to their senses.

No. Anyone that thinks X needs replacing simply doesn't understand X.
Replacing the current crop of window managers and "desktop environments"
is an approach more likely to yield rewards. But GNOME and KDE have too
much momentum at the moment for that to be a likely outcome.
