Maxtor have available for download on their website a tool called 
MaxBlast.  The executible (Windows only - sadly) creates a boot disk to 
load a custom application which can read the SMART logs, perform quick 
and advanced tests and also low-level format their drives.  The 
low-level format option works very well and has never caused me any 
problems.  However I seemingly have the touch-of-death for floppy discs 
so fair less well with actually getting the discs to work....
