If you are asking this from the point of view of
"What happens if the RAID controller goes tits up",
other have answered on the thread.

If you are asking from the poin tof view of backups, well,
make sure and do you backups!
I've recently worked on a failover system which used DRBD to
replicate partitions over the network.


I guess my answer to your question would be:
Mirrored disks on a hardware RAID are good. We supply them.
Also have done software mirroring (lets not start a flamefest here).

So you have the redundancy you want.

Yes - what happens if the RAID card dies?
How about making a set of recovery disks using (say) MondoRescue.
Backup plan is to bring the system back up with one disk, sans
controller.
Or as Huw Lynes says, make sure you can beg/borrow/steal a spare.
