You could probably splice a PIC into the cable, set up to only let BREAK
through if the preceding characters matched a specified string.

I believe the mod chips for game consoles something like this - one
version I heard of added an extra data stream into an existing one, so
the system sees a magic code it is looking for. Because they don't know
which magic code to transmit, they do them all in sequence ...
