The *big* ish problem with _some?_ hardware RAID is that the data stored 
on each disk is usually a closed format used by that controller card. 
this is fine if only the disks die, but if the raid card you have been 
using for the last 3 years packs up, then when you buy a new card it has 
to understand the same on-disk format as the old one, you have about a 
1% chance of finding a compatible card that isnt the original, even then 
chances are its a different hardware revision and that it uses a 
different disk format.

out of intrest, whats the worst thats happened to someone with a 
software RAID setup?
