Sorry I can't 'thread' this response

I may be totally wrong here, but I was under the impression that the
'gateway' machine should be the IP address of the machine at the other
end, rather than the IP address of the interface.

eg 123.0.0.2  = gateway for 124.0.0.0 where physical configuration is

123.0.0.1 = this machine
123.0.0.2 = remote machine  (dual-homed to 123.0.0.0 and 124.0.0.0)
