Using software RAID on your root partition is sheer folly, in my 
opinion.  Using software RAID _at all_ only makes sense in certain 
situations where data loss isn't a problem.

If it's an important machine then use a hardware RAID card, if it's not 
then using software RAID is probably not really needed.
