There used to be a tool called mpkg-j2sdk which would "convert" the 
downloaded file from sun.com into a fairly-compliant .deb. I don't know 
if it is still around online, or if it has been tested with Java 1.5, 
but I've had great success with it and Java 1.4.

As I said, I can't see it on the 'net anymore, but I do have a copy if 
you are interested. mpkg-j2sdk package is ~9.0kb.
