Can't comment on running smp linux, but we do run smp Unix (SCO !).
Basically nothing to learn; it just runs.
SCO provide a utility which shows what each cpu load is; presumambly linux
does similarly.
Far as I can see there is no advantage of running two processors over one
unless you have a number of cpu-gobbling tasks running simultaneously.
I believe that certain device drivers will only run on the base cpu.
We run two cpu's mainly so no given task can hog the machine - thus ensuring
decent response times even during 'peak' usage.

PS: on a totally different matter re another post, surely 10' barge poles
have now been replaced by 3 metre ones ??
