Subject: [Gllug] kernel modules for unrecognized disks
Hi all,
Does anyone know what kernel modules are appropriate for a brand new
Dell Precision 470 system with what windows describes as
* a FUJITSU MAP3147NP SCSI disk (137 Gb)
* a SEAGATE ST3146087LW SCSI disk device (137 Gb)
* couple of Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage controllers,
* couple of Adaptec Embedded SCSI HostRaid Controllers (not sure if
these are needed)
I'm trying to install Linux but the standard Debian and Suse boot
floppies don't recognize them. Would Knoppix? Any other ideas? Google
searches have been tried.

Dennis,
Dell systems have been a bit strange from the start. However, to help
limit your search, you should not need drivers for the drives
themselves, only the storage controllers, so limit your search to them.
During startup of the machine, watch the messages and see if you can
tell which controller the drives are plugged into, then search for
drivers that way. You may have to go into the controller bios to
actually determine which it is, but probably not. If that fails you can
always open the box and see if you can visually determine this. If no
drivers for the currently connected controller are available, you can
try the other controller or even buy one to put in these machines.
Good luck,
Andrew Farnsworth
