"Your Mileage May Vary" - it was a phrase that had to be added to car adverts 
in the 'States back in the early 70's.  At the time, the "oil crisis" was 
actually causing concern amongst the normally profligate Yanks, and all the 
car manufacturers were claiming ever-increasing miles-per-gallon ratings.

Nader (and others) took on the motor companies, and demonstrated that their 
claims were "inaccurate".  A Law was passed that meant advertisers had to 
include get-out clauses (like YMMV) in their sales pitch.
