[Gllug] Excess Users created

I have the situation where my 'uptime' shows that I have five users on this
machine, although I am the only user on a standalone. 'w' shows just two
------------------------------------

It seems that everytime that I log off, and then log back on again, another
'user episode' [probably not the correct term but I can't think what else to
call them] is created but never closed. Restarting the x-server makes no
difference at all.

How can I find out what these users are?
How can I close them without rebooting?

I did think that I'd asked this question before, but I've been back in the
archives until April and can find no trace of me asking it.
