[Gllug] Getting initramfs to work

I know this is a kernel building question and so not the usual - but I
thought I'd try none the less.

X compiling a 2.6.12.3 kernel for a device with no disk. Normally I'd
NFS-Root mount some disk space but due to an apparent bug in Fedora Core
4 I cannot do that right now
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=165346)

So I want to use initramfs, rather than an old style initrd. I've been
able to getr the kernel to build a .cpio file but it doesn't want to
seem to boot it. I can't really find a beginners guide to using
initramfs and the README with the kernel documentation is a bit thin.

The books I have are really all in the 2.4 era too

Anybody know where a good guide exists on the internet, or failing that,
care to recommend a good book that describes the internals of 2.6 (bit
of a moving target in some areas, I admit)?
