[Gllug] plug / unplug mice without restarting X

Is there an easy way to plug & unplug mice and other input devices
without having to restart X to use them?

swsusp works but scuppers my network connections - and even if it were
properly configured not to, it's not very elegant.

The only thing I can think of is having X use named pipes and getting
udev to start a cat process from newly-created mouse devices to the
relevant pipe.
