[Gllug] Copying a Locked file

I had an interesting one today, ESX server had locked a file (dsk file) that
need to be copied in the management console and try as I might I could find
where the lock was. Unfortunately ESX doesn't have lsof so manually had to
look through the ps list and lock file killing anything that referenced the
file without joy. Someone else also looked at the problem and managed to
init 0 so although a product machine hosting many VMs died he did clear the
problem - although no-one is very happy with him.
Anyway does anyone know if there is any way to force a copy of a locked file
without a reboot or killing something that may have the file locked (in the
this case I think it was vmkernel itself that had the lock and that can't be
stopped without downing all the running vms.)
