To be honest, every time I look at VOIP (my family is in Australia) I
discover that the prices have once again dropped for PSTN-accessible
alternatives. I presume these guys are all using VOIP for the back-end
but neither I nor, crucially, my folks, need to learn, implement and
debug some software system.

I considered buying my Mum and IP phone (she has broadband) but at a
minimum cost of fifty squid, that buys a lot of 2p/minute phone calls!

(www.18866.co.uk requires no up-front or monthly charges and does 2p/min
to Australia and free UK landline calls. I don't work for them, just a
happy customer. They also have the nifty feature of allowing you to
register any BT landline to phone from, which means you can make calls
on a friend's phone and have it billed to you. Used that for Xmas Eve
calls to Australia.)
