It still does what you want. It also copies the various images into the
boot directory, but it's not a problem if they are already there.
If you have grief with this, then run the grub shell and use the setup
command in there.

yes, the documentation is pretty shonky. I think it's a better product
than lilo, but it's perversely difficult to use. Some decent
documentation would go a long way.
