There is an sshd_config setting:
#KeepAlive yes


I've had a similar problem for the last three weeks or so (worked fine up  
till then).  But what I noticed is that if you say type top and then go in  
on another session and do a ps -ax you see the top running.  If you go  
back to the first session and hit "q" and do the ps -ax again its  
stopped!  So the connection has only been dropped in one direction.  You  
can type exit also to cleanly close the session down.

The weird thing is it only started after a major BT outage about 3-4 weeks  
ago.  I had two years access without any problems.  Nothing my end or the  
remote server has changed.
