At the expense of access to metadata. Which gives you the most info?

leto:~% file test.*
test.abw: XML document text
test.gnumeric: gzip compressed data, from Unix
test.pdf: PDF document, version 1.3
test.png: PNG image data, 1998 x 1800, 8-bit colormap, non-interlaced
test.sxw: Zip archive data, at least v2.0 to extract

The two structured files (PDF and PNG) give far more information about
their contents. To me, that's a win.
