I've used BT on the Mac with excellent results.  

In your case, it looks like your firewall is OK, but it bears
repeating: Check to see if you have a firewall in the way which could
be dropping the back-connections.  You need to ensure that at least
ports 6881-6889 INCOMING point to the machine running BT.

There are companies flogging devices to ISPs which (claim to) rate
limit "peer-to-peer" traffic.  Your ISP might have one ...
