fanless devices usually rely entirely on good old-fashioned convection to keep
their temperatures within range.

I have seen crashes even on fanned boxes where there as inadequate airspace
ABOVE and behind them (ie jammed under a desk).

Have you tried sticking a desk-fan next to one of them to improve air
circulation  ( a temp bodge admittedly, but it might prove a point) ?
