thanks all who responded. the downloads don't actually install - as you
mention, apt updates occasionally do break. i've looked at cron-apt and
apticron and have settled with the latter, with a small modification in the
script to use only the debian security updates. that way, it runs nightly,
and downloads all updated packages and sends me a wonderfully detailed email
about the relevant packages.
russel and mimo: you honestly think reading debian security announcements is
a better way to go about this? i haven't the time nor the inclination to go
through each one and then login to all five boxes and update them, i'd rather
the packaging system would just let me know that something, for whatever
reason, needs updating, and then deal with anything that breaks.
