I've never used emacs.  I started using vi because it was there and
emacs wasn't.  My friend advised me that the only way to learn vi was
to jump in head first - use it for absolutely everything for a week,
and by the end of the week you'll be fine.  He was right.

So I can't really tell you which (if either) is 'better', only that vi
is awesome, and if you decide to use it, immerse yourself in it, and
soon it will become second nature.
