I spoke too soon.  Even after setting up the md5sum (I regret I didn't
check it - just regenerated it) the dpkg-reconfigure process still isn't
writing anything to XF86Config-4.

However - this does give me some pointers.  Perhaps it has other bugs
which cause it to silently fail to do what it says it has done.  I shall
investigate.
