Perl is IMHO a good language to get everyday work done; if you're good
and adhere to a clean coding style you even might be able to use Perl
for programs you still want to read tomorrow. I'd anyhow strongly
discourage using it for getting started; it's just very easy to do some
things with Perl that are way more complicated in other languages
because other languages are just way more strict than Perl is, so
probably you'll have a hard time moving, say, from Perl to Java - 
the other way is pretty straightforward. Python is a good deal of
balance somewhere in between... Btw here in Germany they sell
a book named "Python für Kids" (für == for ...) which tries to smoothy
introduce young people to programming with Python. Good thing, I guess.
