I'd recommend this.  Though if you're not after streaming, I'd go for
this:

It's the Unixy idea applied to music.  A tiny server process, mpd, does
the playing of your music.  Various clients (including web ones, X ones,
OS/X, Windows, CLI, ncurses, bash etc etc) connect to the server to edit
playlists and control the player.
