I have not used Ubuntu, but it is very similar to Debian. Debian assumes
multiple users accessing the computer at any time, so security is important
and the default is often secure, forcing you to RTFM rather than leaving
everything insecure and the administrator oblivious.
Log in as root, check /etc/fstab to ensure the drives are not mounted ro,
and use "vigr" (a specialised editor similar to vi) to amend the access
permissions listed in the file /etc/group
