Yes, I use it.  I maintain two parallel folder hierarchies: the active
hierarchy is mbox and I never need to search it; for the archive
hierarchy I use maildir and mairix despite the speed and disk space
cost, because its searching features are superb.

I run a database update each night and have shell scripts defined to
search and populate the virtual folder of results.
