Probably the former, although not impossible it's the latter.
Best course of action is to contact the mail server admin and tell them
to switch off these notifications. Most viruses forge the 'From:'
address nowadays anyway, so sending a notice to the purported sender of
a message is almost guaranteed not to reach the person with the virus.
