Best answer I've found so far would be

http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/streaming/

open source, runs on linux, apple, windows, solaris, WMP friendly,
uni/multicast and mobile streaming ready.

... so says the marketing.  don't suppose anyone has used it in anger
(esp. on non apple hardware...)?
