I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst changing

  kernel   /vmlinuz-2.4.27-2-386 root=/dev/hda9 ro hdc=ide-scsi

to

  kernel    /vmlinuz-2.4.27-2-386 root=/dev/hda8 ro hdc=ide-scsi

and all is much better.  Thanks, apologies for wasting your time, and
why is it that hitting the send button is so often what it takes to
make you see sense?
