[Gllug] OT: umbrella companies for contract work

Cant comment too much, I used to freelance (for about 10 years) but used my own limited company.

This stance from agents is standard practice, if I recall correctly it's because of changes
to the tax laws in the 70's.

Go along to http://www.pcgroup.org.uk. I used to be a member, in fact I was a founder member
but let my membership lapse when I stopped freelance working. It is worth joining them IMO
as you can find loads of information, however if you only plan to freelance for 2 months
it may not be worth it.

Unfortunately I can't recommend an umbrella as I have never used one, just be careful of
fixed price 'contractor specialist' accountants, they charge a lot of money and offer little
value.

Setting up a company is very easy, it costs very little if you do it yourself. Take a look
at http://www.companies-house.gov.uk, all the forms are there. All you need is a decent local
accountant once you are running. You can buy an off the shelf company which normally only
costs about £90, but you don't get to choose the name.
