I am the only user (well, I set up an explicit superuser account as
well) and after your hint I checked and I am entitled to use sound.

It seems that my old friend esd is dying a lot - but not all the time
and so I think I must have some sort of hardware fault unless there is
something I missed.

I miss the RH/Fedora soundcard detect application :(
