Humbug! I was just using cat for illustrating the concept of
redirects. Clearly I also win this month's redundant use
of the internet award, since I could have just run  

  $ date
  Mon Sep  5 15:10:11 BST 2005

to read the date off my local atomic clock, instead of some
dodgy remote time server ;-)
