If you want to go ahead and try it, you should have a look at this

I last looked at this quite a while ago, and it's evolved a bit since
then - it appears you can get away with just patching the X server these
days. Patches and rpm's for X.org are linked from the bottom of the
page.

If you try it, do let the list know how it goes....
