They also prevent some twit plugging a vacuum cleaner or amplifier or
any other device into a dimmer output. Running a motor off a triac or
thyristor channel can be intresting to say the least. 'Kettle' plugs
are also used on some lower power (sub 1Kw,) usually portable kit.

Maybe in large commercial venues, and indeed there is a legal limit of
1.5m on a tail which is observed in the breach more often than not. In
the smaller venue, especially of the "art centre" or church hall
variety, tails often comprise the whole system still.
