We use wikis for collaboration.  But for discussion, wikis don't
really work.  You can easily end up with a complete mess (see, for
example, http://c2.com/cgi-bin/wiki?FunctionalProgramming - there are
worse examples on that wiki).  Wikipedia has discussion pages, which
work for long-term slow discussion.  And they bottom-post on those!

Email, mailing lists and bulletin boards work for discussion.

Different tools for different modes of interaction.
