I have a tape drive (HP DAT DDS2 type thingy) but when I try to write to
it it fails:

16777215 bytes.

Apr 20 20:21:31 noisybox kernel: [ 3088.192988] st0: Error on write
filemark.

Googling suggested this might be a dirty head, so I got a cleaning tape
and inserted it (that's all I have to do, right?) but it still fails
(above is the message *after* cleaning)

Anything I can do, do you think?
