I'm still re-reading (for the third time) this as it slowly sinks in.

I guess the main question I am trying to resolve now is that of what
happens on 64 bit architecture with 32 bit kernel and userland. 
Hopefully I'll be able to work it out from first principles, but rules
of thumbs or helpful explanations would be most welcome.
