I had similar problem with a server last week. It also started
happening right after I put a new hard disk in. It would restart at
random times. I had the case open to check the fans, when it did one
of these restarts, and noticed a sound exactly like a light tap on a
glass with a pen. I left it running on my desk with the speaker
disconnected and heard it a few more times during the day. I assumed
this was a sound a motherboard was not supposed to make (perhaps a
capacitor?) and replaced the board, thinking I had damaged it in some
way squeezing the hard disk into a tight fit.

It was a VIA MS-6738.

(Not that this obscure little story helps you in any way with your
problem, but there it is!)
