I've found that not cooling the drives properly is a *BIG* cause of
failure.
My server over there:
thoth:/etc# hdparm -i /dev/hd?|grep Model
Model=MAXTOR 4K040H2, FwRev=A08.1500, SerialNo=672131476069
Model=_NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG, FwRev=2.16, SerialNo=
Model=Maxtor 6Y160P0, FwRev=YAR41BW0, SerialNo=Y43H3HEE
Model=Maxtor 6Y160P0, FwRev=YAR41BW0, SerialNo=Y43H3K5E
Model=Maxtor 6Y160P0, FwRev=YAR41BW0, SerialNo=Y45YBSPE
Model=Maxtor 6Y160P0, FwRev=YAR41BW0, SerialNo=Y43H11EE
Model=Maxtor 6Y160P0, FwRev=YAR41BW0, SerialNo=Y43MFW8E
The 40GB Maxtor drive is 3 or more years old; the others a year or
more. All have been running continuously except for the odd power
failure.
The important figures:
/dev/hda: MAXTOR 4K040H2: 25 C
/dev/hdc: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG: S.M.A.R.T. not available
/dev/hde: Maxtor 6Y160P0: 28 C
/dev/hdf: Maxtor 6Y160P0: 24 C
/dev/hdg: Maxtor 6Y160P0: 27 C
/dev/hdi: Maxtor 6Y160P0: 37 C
/dev/hdk: Maxtor 6Y160P0: 37 C
cheers, Rich.
