[Gllug] ssh over GPRS -- slow and hangs alot or am I doing something wrong?

This definitely isn't my experience, so it's either a problem with my
setup or with Orange.

AFAICT the only way to get a proper 3G data connection out of Orange
is to use their proprietary PCMCIA card, which is Windoze only:

Vodafone appears to be the same situation.
That's useless for me, but maybe I'm missing something ...
