Any idea if the USB version works with Linux and Mac OS X laptops (I
have both that I'd like to use)?

I have a Bluetooth GPS unit which has been no end of trouble.  You're
basically lucky to get a signal if you're standing in the middle of an
open field, and the bluetooth connection periodically locks up.
