[Gllug] ADSL on BT phone wires

I was under the impression that the only BT service (or in those days the Post
Office!) serveice that ever used one wire for a circuit was Telex,  where
one-wire + ground was the transmit circuit and another-wire + ground was the
receive circuit.  But this had to run at 80V+/80V- from memory and at a
pathetic 50baud.

Someone on here I am sure would know  -  but would a very high frequency
signal transmit over one wire and ground at all,  or woudl it somehow just
get 'soaked up' ??
