I bought my current laptop (hp/compaq nx6110) direct from HP, it's not
a flashy consumer laptop, and so comes in a nice matt black, really
comfortable trackpad and is a very good 'no nonsense' laptop.
I've been running an old fedora on it since I got it, and I have
everything but the winmodem working (I haven't tried the suspend to
disk/ram yet). It is very well documented for fedora and other
distro's.
I'd recomend it definately (slim, looks nice, no hardware issues in
the couple of years I've had it). I've been using it solidly for
software development and integration almost every day since I got it (
probably only a total of 20 days in the last couple of years I haven't
used it for at least a few hours ).
It's even worked nicely with the variety of projectors I've used for
presentations, both to clients, and at perl mongers.
Cheers,
A.
