<flamebait>Gentoo just diverts resources from useful open source 
development tasks</flamebait>

Just imagine if all the effort people put into Gentoo & extracting that
0.1% of extra speed from a custom compiled app, actually instead went 
into improving the dumb code algorithms. You might see 10, 50, 90% speedups
without any need to turn on funky compile flags. Speedups which would
benefit everyone forever more...
