Maybe I should be corrected on this, but my understanding of salsaman's
suggestion is that, after NUMBERx1024 bytes written to the tape, the
backup routine will ask for a second tape to be mounted.

When calculating NUMBER, allow for some bad patches on the tape. Divide
1024 into a slightly smaller number than 4GB to ensure that you don't
run out of tape before the routine asks for the next one to be loaded,
