[Gllug] Advice needed on Ubuntu

Preface the command with gksudo - for example, "gksudo synaptic". You 
can either stick that behind an icon or press Alt-F2 to pop up a window 
to enter the command.

gksudo will prompt for your password and then pass you onto the second 
program with root authorisation.
