More to the point, a connection will fail when made with a 
straight-through cable between two similar interfaces, regardless of 
their type. This makes sense to me; I don't understand where the issue 
lies, but I can see from the point of view of people who are stupid 
enough to to expect cables with plugs they can insert into pieces of 
equipment to work, and to be frustrated when they don't. These are the 
same people I wouldn't expect to be able to wire a mains plug.

Fortunately many devices are auto-sensing these days; we'll all be safer 
with the advent of the auto-sensing toaster.
