No, extending cables works just as easily with my proposed system as it
does with the current broken one.

Gender of connectors is orthogonal to the way they're wired.  Current
female-female widgets (used for joining two RJ45 patch cables) are wired
1-1, 2-2, 3-3 etc.  In the "just one kind of cable" world they'd have to
be wired 1-8, 2-7, 3-6 etc. like the cables, but it would all just work
and only one kind of everything required.
